Orly Ruiz | Starting my blog! Day2daY
Too much to tell especially about life... But I would like to concentrate on my virtual life.. Dealing day-to-day with computers and technology is all I wanted... But more is reality... especially about relationships... with loved ones, families, friends, and even cyber friends...
Starting up is very important... What interests me in posting this BLOG is the idea that it could enhance and improve my communication skills with you people out there! And in a way it could stabilize my virtual plans... especially moving my website and staying on top of the infamous search engines out there. Yes, www.orly.coms.ph is climbing on top and hope it'll stay on track. It's about my life and my professional Portfolio.
Too many things to say and share... and learn of course. All I have to do is communicate... and the idea will spread on a nick of time. Sharing points of view and realizing that the key to a successful communication is using the right tools... And I hope I have chosen the starting key... BLOG is good.. As far as I can think of it. Consider it as a constructive tool in improving one's communication with the outside world... Try it too today! You'll see!

Done the regulars... Now checking my e-mail. Wow, lots of reply lately for Birthday Reminder - a way of knowing your friends birthday through an email system provided by www.BirthdayAlarm.com. All you need to do is be a member (very easy way) and send emails to all your friends to ask them to fill up some or register too.
Received a lovely message from Mae... She's really cool... Seeing her soon is really exciting! Can't express it here but it surely is "EXCITING"!
I've installed and hopefully, test some symbian application for my 3650 including SmsMachine which provides an instant msg mail box for incoming sms and calls. It also has a black list capability. Too bad I can't test it right now since I am using the roaming services of SMART COMM.
I will continue designing my website. This time, R2 (RELEASE2) will be my focus. I am still doing some self-training and tutorials in Adobe Image Ready. After doing some cool design in Adobe Photoshop, next thing to do is do the layout (HTML).. It's cool and fun... Designing is really getting into my mind.
Well, that's all for now, catch you later folks!

Now, wondering about many things, ideas, like going back to the Philippines (for vacation or what?). Thinking more about business! About how to have a better income and at the same time, do what I want to do, to be in control of my life. And to provide... Like I said, many things in my mind. Ah, need to research for software and stuffs for Nokia 6600 of my client, a friend actually. Just finding some symbian software in the net. I hope I could finish it today...

Thursday is one of my favorite days here in KSA. It's like Friday on the normal working day outside the Arab world. Half-day work, half-day bored, and more time with friends and to do my stuffs outside. Including watching videos, playing and even doing some extra extra activities.
Nothing to do much except to send some bucks home. And planning to buy some speakers (5.1 or better), I hope so...
I'm planning to go some malling today to see if what can I find any useful stuff to buy... But still need to save some of course...
Ok guys, catch you later... Have a nice weekend.
Over and out...

Hello!
Well, just to let this blog live since I was very very busy lately… I want to add here my AO (Anti Online) posts just to make my personal thread a little alive. You might want to check my links for posts that are really helpful (I hope and guessed)… Just check it out, and hope you find time to join such forums and community since it will enlighten you much about security and technology. I had been a member of AO since January 2005, but way back 2003 I had been reading some threads that interest me and I learn quite. But being a member gives you more choices and opening the window to the security and technology bragging and what else…. CooL to know that things and stuff in the computer world is very interesting and challenging… Especially the security….
All my AO posts below (ooopppss, it will force you to join here!)
http://www.antionline.com/search.php?s=&action=showresults&searchid=251774
Anyway, my purpose is to drive you into something new (in your case), have a look around at AO and see if it will interest you the way it interest me, since some of you guys I had reminded about e-mail security, and some computer tips. At AO, you’ll find more of it, and could save your @$$ the way it saved mine (by securing my BoX to the maximum I can).

Guys,
After crossing one thread yesterday about AO News Letters, I downloaded all of them and so far, so far I really admire the works, it's an extraordinary effort to put up in such community and I really am glad I had joined AO cause I believe this is a right decision (contrary to SOME people bragging about ideas that AO s8cks, man, they really don't understand 1% of the cause [the why]).
Keep it up, I wish I could contribute too, but I guess not yet for the security tutorials, MsM, if you need anything from multimedia or some other areas, I could help (really) in layout, logos, some cool effects (if it is really needed), but on top of that I really am interrested to contribute efforts one way or the other.
Goodluck to issue #13!

dialupdaemon,
Following up with what the guys had already told, quote:
I have tried several different combinations but can't get the computer to start.
-what do you mean by this?
Can't start means...
1. The BoX is completely dead - no power (as if you push the power button) and BAM! Nothing. Most of my experience with motherboard (like yesterday with the Arabic Secretary), I assumed that power supply is the problem (have you isolated this issue, like try to use another PS, or try the current PS to another board?), well, cause the case of the BoX yesterday is a near-to-dead PS which makes the board "not doing the right thing".
2. The BoX may somehow be in the "showing the good-old splash screen" but not continue to whatever you expect it to do (to boot of course)
And trying several combinations? With the wire? The wire cables should not be mixed or interchange huh?
*is there any sound or something (that you could hear)? Cause MB has this alert thing to tell you or guide you waht is the problem. (RTFM).
A little more reply could enlighten the crowd.

Search Engine Ranking: Being On Top Of It
By: scratchONtheBOX

Sidenotes:
Firstly, I have made this tutorial by my own after reading and understanding most of the references I put here. Second, I have checked with the AO SEARCH and read most of the related tutorials herewith (also mentioned here for reference and link purposes). Third, I have read sticky(s) about good ways on how to write tutorials and how to avoid ANGRY guys who will flame this idea (hope not). Lastly, after considering all of the above, and had the courage to push this through, I had put-up this tut based on my personal experience and it really works in my case.
Website designers, developers and hobbyist, hear me, hear me! Ever had dreamed of putting your web site on top of the list of BIG search engines for FREE?
Of course there are pretty d@mn easy but costly ways to do this but what I will bring out here is how to do it free, YES! FREE! It might as well be called as “DO-IT-YOURSELF-THING” and worth achieving. I’ve started these steps since the early part of 2004, up to now I used it in the web sites I am creating.
This simple tutorial (I hope it will pass as one), will emphasize on the following aspects:
1) Secrets of Web Site Submission (WHO, WHAT, WHERE and HOW’s of website submission).
2) HTML coding secrets (meta tags, titles, etc.)
3) Personal experiences with Web site ranking
Going to the details…
1) The Secrets of Web Site Submission
Any recipe has its own secrets, so as search engine submission. Most of the Search Engine out there has a “submit-your-site” ready on the front of your face when browsing their search page. Few things to consider in the fields that you will be filling up before you submit it. The submission form will demand you the following:
A) URL (Uniform Resource Locator) – Known as your domain
- com .net, .org - top-level domain or TLDs
- or the "country-code" top-level domain or ccTLDs like in my case - http://www.orly.coms.ph
- other types of TLDs
B) Description of the web site that you are submitting
- If your web site is a personal type, you can give a description starting your name (full name is optional but it works especially when OLD PALS are looking for you in the net, but be careful giving your FULL IDENTITY. Do it at your own risk.) You could also put a description like your schools, company, place where you live (town, City, Province, Country).
- Commercial site would be better described by the following sequence – COMMERCIAL NAME, PRODUCTS/SERVICES OFFERED, LOCATION. You have to consider that if the descriptions you are thinking had been already used often (i.e. security, anti-virus, car rentals, etc.), you will probably need more than this tutorial. The best way is find a relevant keyword pertaining to your site that would be unique but may not be far away from the idea. But still you could include that common description on your list.
quote:
Your target keywords should always be at least two or more words long. Usually, too many sites will be relevant for a single word, such as "stamps." This "competition" means your odds of success are lower. Don't waste your time fighting the odds. Pick phrases of two or more words, and you'll have a better shot at success.
- The Description is one of the main keys next to your URL in making your web site easy to be recognized in the search engine database. If I am longing to put my personal web site into the top search engines, I will use my common name or nick name on my first description (i.e. orly ruiz).
Here is a website that links to the BIG SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION PAGES. Start submitting:
http://www.bjorgul.com/?id=links
And this Free web ranking report tool that could report your web site’s ranking with a specific keyword in Major Search Engines:
http://www.submitawebsite.com/siteranker.html
2) HTML coding secrets (meta tags, titles, etc.) – Optimization
Your web pages in your web site (I mentioned web pages because I would like to point out that all your pages are relevant in the ranking of web sites in search engines -I will further discuss this on the next aspect [3]), the same with any open-source program written should be made in a manner that it would be very easy to read the source. Since coding in HTML has a lot of styles and protocols, writing your code (or at least after doing it in WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML maker program [M$ Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver, Adobe Image Ready, Etc.], you could do the requirements in optimizing properties like title, meta tags and links) that could be very related to your web site or the services it offers.
- Title – Very important in Search Engine Indexing. Web page title is one of the major keys being indexed. (For you beginners in web design, the TITLE shows up on the Top Left location of your browser called the TITLE BAR).
- Meta tags - Being used by the infamous META-CRAWLERS like google, yahoo, teoma, etc. There are two major things you should remember in Meta Tags, the Description and keywords.
- Description – should include the full description of your web page. Such description should cover the whole idea why the web site is there. Includes what are the expected contents that the pages compose of. If it is a personal page, like biography or pertaining to your hobby, you should include descriptions very related to that subject.
- keywords – words that actually are part of your description but is the specific of the description. Keywords should be carefully picked since it is vital in META-CRAWLERS. In your keywords, include all the possible hints that are related to your site. Choose your keywords wisely.
- Links – it is a good and powerful practice to put your web site links to where ever places you could put in the Internet, with the right places like forums, blogs, and most popular portals in the net. You could also consider including it to your local portals for specific search benefits. You could see more of this steps I had taken in the next aspect [3].
In HTML, a typical PERSONAL web site should include the following coding:
{Sorry, the code cannot be displayed here or something, just visit my link below.}
3) Personal Experiences with Web site ranking that I can share
Most of you will probably think that I made this article to boost my presence more in the web, since I will ask you to search for my name (not exactly my EXACT NAME, whatever!). Really, the more you searched for a particular subject, the more the search engines are remembering it. So, what I do is have a place in my web site where you can search ( http://www.orly.coms.ph/neo.htm ). I actually put lots of these search engines in my page. Even put the starting or default name to my keyword “orly ruiz”, and others.
Further, SEARCH ENGINES WORK HAND-IN-HAND. It means that when you rank good in the major search engines (GOOGLE, YAHOO, ALTAVISTA, ETC.), chances are your site will probably be also indexed well in other search engines. Here is a website illustrating the CONNECTION between SEARCH ENGINES - http://www.bruceclay.com/searchengi...onshipchart.htm
Another observation I can tell is that you should also include other pages in your web site to be submitted just in-case your main page is inaccessible by any means, your other pages could be available in the search result as well as other web sites that you are maintaining that has relevance with what you long for. In that way, your product or service or even your information could still be accessible in the Internet even though the main web site cannot be reached. Unless there are unavoidable circumstances that the entire DOMAIN is really unreachable.
Using popular local and international portals, forums and message boards could boost the presence of your website in the World Wide Web Search Engines. The more links your web site gets, the more chances it could have in going or staying at the top.
You can also search for local search engines and submit your web site there. This way, promoting locally, especially if you target local customers or audiences would be a great step.
“Before, for the keyword “orly ruiz” and other important and relevant keywords for my web site when I searched in Google, Yahoo!, Altavista and others, I could not find my web site in at least top 50 of the results there, but after doing the above-mentioned procedures, as of this date, you could find my web site on the rank of these search engines, without paying any penny for it.”
Disclaimer: The above-mentioned procedures on submitting website would entirely take some time to have results, although in certain cases, like mine, the more visit the web page is receiving, the BIGGER the chances it could also be on the TOP. Too much things to consider in expecting good result, but most of it, when done correctly is effective to date. And to the best of my knowledge, such steps in optimizing and promoting your web site is not illegal, further check with your local rules and regulations before doing this.
This tutorial as some will criticize (or not hopefully), is far different from tips since I added some of the actual things or scenario that you could do or prevent in order to have a healthy and TOP-CRAWLING web site (more applicable in a personal-type of web site).
I know this is not the entirety of the step-by-step procedures in achieving SEARCH ENGINE RANKING, like I told you, there are lots of ways, most of them COSTLY. Nevertheless, I hope it helped! See references and other links on the last part below.
quote:
Also, remember that while search engines are a primary way people look for web sites, but they are not the only way. People also find sites through word-of-mouth, traditional advertising, the traditional media, newsgroup postings, web directories and links from other sites. Many times, these alternative forms are far more effective draws than are search engines.
Good luck!
Comments (criticisms) and suggestions are openly accepted and appreciated.

-With Lycos, in my case, I am also having difficulty getting on top of it, but at least my BLOG page is on the 1st and 2nd rank as of this moment (which may lead to my main website). Maybe some strategy they do for business purposes.

In the "Web Sites" section, first page results come from LookSmart, and secondary results are provided by Yahoo!. Some results come from the Open Directory and the Lycos web crawler. The Open Directory powers the category links at the top of the "Web Sites" section, and also provides some web site matches. Below the category links are web site links, which come primarily from LookSmart and Yahoo search.

http://www.gnm.org.uk/ - neat website you have there.
Based on the Search Engine Relationship Chart, Google really is doing its job in providing more index results (both primary search results and paid results) to other search engines. But it is also essential if you could list your web site on Yahoo! since it is also sharing its index to some famous Search Engine entities.
Looking at the chart, you may see some alliances with those search engines, the more alliance they have, and the greater their dominance could be. That’s business.
Oh, one more thing, it is mentioned that the said RELATIONSHIP CHART, it is the United States edition, I wonder how did it differ on other regions like Europe and Asia? I guessed there are other Major Search Engines actively indexing in EU alone that were not considered much in the US.

'Brad Pitt' virus targets Microsoft
By Dan Ilett, ZDNet (UK)
Published on ZDNet News: March 31, 2005, 9:07 AM PT
Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Britney Spears are the subjects of a virus scam that is attempting to recruit computers for a denial-of-service attack on Microsoft.
Hackers have released a self-spreading worm, called Ahker-F, that promises salacious movie clips of the celebrities. The e-mails contain text such as: "Watch Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt cought (sic) on TAPE! SEXY CLIP! WATCH IT!"
Attached to the e-mail is a .Zip file that contains the worm. If opened, the worm spreads to the user's e-mail contacts, disables security settings on the PC, and launches a denial-of-service attack against Microsoft's security update Web site.
"People's appetite for salacious gossip is insatiable, and some may be tempted to run what appear to be pornographic movie files distributed across the Internet," Sophos, a security software company, said in a statement. "However, virus writers have a long history of disguising their malicious code as this kind of content. Everyone should be very careful about what they choose to run on their computer."
The worm also spreads via file-sharing networks, using file names such as PORNO.exe, XXX.exe and Naked Britney.exe.
Sophos said Thursday that only a small number of reports of the worm had been received.
- Hmmm.. Seems that the legacy of Virus associated with celebrities and porn material really catches much attention from the un-aware (still) users who are checking their e-mails without taking any precautions. Need to spread much awareness, people.

The worm also spreads via file sharing networks
- I forgot to mention this other source, which is very popular in spreading the virus silently to most of the systems involved in P2P. In my personal experience, way back 2002 when I first observed the capabilities and effects of Kazaa (a peer-to-peer [P2P] software), in which we actually tried and used inside our network. My supervisor (NET ADMIN) was the main culprit in promoting this software during that time, I had asked him about it. I am curious about how does it work and why they call it P2P. He then told me that there are interconnected servers and host computers involved in the file sharing. P2P are actually good in broadband connections (like DSL). I follow-up my question with "Is it safe?", then my supervisor keep bragging that every software we use is not safe, even M$ products, he QUOTE was not 100% safe. I knew that with such capabilities of sharing without limit, viruses and other malicious program could use this means to spread. Then after several weeks, we had been alarmed for INTRUSIONS ATTEMPT into our system. He quickly stopped Kazaa and started tracing and monitoring the network activities. Using combinations of IDS tools, firewall and AVs, anti-spyware was not that popular in our country during those times, he learned that IPs from Taiwan, China and Europe (if it really is true) have been port-scanning the network for several days during that time and trying to find open ports and probably try to pass the security layers of the system. We had HARDWARE FIREWALL, PROXY, IIS and ISA Server fronting the gateway of our very new ADSL connection during that time. We are forced to have a separate Server for the IDS to log the activities of the network (especially the external activities). He formatted the BoX (with the Kazaa client) and stopped doing that thing he did. Good thing that not much penetration had had happened and timely all the unused ports had been closed and locked-down. *Eventhough it was never traced the connection of using the P2P and the attempted intrusion, many things could really happen. It's just one suspect.
Just like you said, Und3ertak3r, the user is still the weakest link. Trying software without studying/reviewing it first (like knowing the consequences of using such SW) is not a good idea. At least it should be tested in separate BoX for experimentation. Life's lesson that is, we have to be very attentive to cause and effect, advantages and disadvantages. Even small issues should be considered as threat. P2Ps were good for the reason of file sharing, but not good at all if you talk about security. I remember the thread/news about Kazaa lite employees don't even want to use their own product ('coz it makes their network very very slow). Then I remember one article about Oracle's Ellison's idea of eating their own dog food (translated as "using your own product in your system"), well, Kazaa lite's own people don't want to use their own product anymore.
On the other hand, CLICKING that link in e-mail is TRULY a bad idea (even if it comes from your very best friend or relative), especially if you are not aware of the consequences.
SW Patches should slow the process (of virus spreading) and most probably stop it, but more and more new-kids-on-the-block will rise and do some nasty stuff, nastier, meaner way of social engineering. I wish there was patch for human.
